Malcolm dodges Bonneville and finds sanctuary with Mr Boatwright. The narrative carries a sinister undercurrent.

The scene with Dianie appears superfluous, the addition of yet another supernatural element does not add to the narrative. Unsure weather the device regarding the contest for Lyra made sense. Reminds me of Odysseus and his encounter with the sea siren.

Malcolm,s encounter with Bonneville at Murdstone's house is gripping. Coleman's novel hints at the evil adults do to children. This novel is clearly addressing child exploitation.

Excellent prose when describing one to one encounters. Technical descriptions are very good, Pullman' s style reminds me of C. S. Lewis.

Wonderful writing style, Pullman demonstrates confidence and clarity in exposition. The league of st. Alexander and the badge wearing conformity that follows is vivid, Pullman clearly spells out the dangers of living in a theocracy.
