Herzen’s stand on violence led the Left to accuse him of insufficient commitment to the cause. His response is summed up in his essays “To an Old Comrade,” addressed to Bakunin, where he affirms the absurdity of the primitive faith in absolutes that had led in the past to emancipation by means of the guillotine, enlightenment through the whip.

Of course a political community cannot achieve all the economic or cultural success that its citizens dream of, and of course its policies must sometimes disappoint some citizens through policies that benefit others. But political values name distinct responsibilities that a community has to its citizens, responsibilities that it is not simply disappointing but wrong to ignore or violate.
