I have begun reading this book again. The biography not only tells the story of Douglass but it also fills in the mood and societal conflicts developing in this time of commercial growth within our nation. The undercurrents of discontent around slavery and freedom are not tamed and will lead to the showdown, the Civil War, eventually.
