First, I must say that I am a new reader and have only been reading as a bobby for two years, so I still have a lot of Koontz and King to read. So far I've read 11 by Koontz and 8 by King. I enjoy both authors and believe that my particular mood at any given time would have the final say on who is better, but I've definitely noticed some strong and weak points from both men.
King's characters are superior to Koontz's characters. They are more in depth and believable. Sometimes King blows me away with his dialog, and he is a master at storytelling.
Koontz's has a special charm when it comes to comedy, and is good at weaving it into his stories at the perfect time. Sometimes I think it can be a hit or miss with Koontz, but his good stuff is really good. His suspense hooks me nearly every time.
They both have written books that I adore and will read again. Kootnz wrote the scariest book I've read so far, and King wrote the most disturbing book I've read. If I had to pick one, it would probably be King just because his stories tend to be a little deeper.
