This book is a real page-turner right from the start. I'm loving Tolstoy's characterization so far: the protagonist's obvious moral shortcomings mix with his jovial manner to create an accessible window into the gradual shift in Russian cultural norms in a time of political change. I'm really looking forward to a four hour bus ride's worth of reading time tomorrow.
