How easy is it to read like a novel? I own them and have used them for research but not cover to cover?

I listen to these as audiobooks, mostly as I go to sleep. The story is so familiar to me that I’m not really paying attention. I also love the reader, Grover Gardner. And I think Shelby Foote is a masterful writer and storyteller and crafter if character. As a historian, there are some major issues. So these are all about the aesthetics for me.
