While I am hooked on this book, it feels very reminiscent of The Jewel by Amy Ewing, not enough to feel like a rip-off, but the magic system of the Belles in this book and the Surrogates in the Jewel feel eerily similar.

I really like how there isn't a whole lot of romance in this book. I mean it's definitely there in parts and when it is there it's done in such a fantastic way, but the heart of the story is completely separate from the romance which feels a bit refreshing. Part of me that feels like I know what will happen later in the book, but another part of me also feels I'm wrong.

Things are finally heating up and I'm really enjoying the story so far. It's moved on from feeling like The Jewel for me to feel like I can sort of breathe again. It wasn't that it felt TOO much like The Jewel, in fact, there are a lot of differences, especially in characters and world-building influences, but I was worried it would have a lot of similar story beats.
