James Joyce was born today. So, humanity wasn't a complete waste.

Lol I just saw an article online something like "100 years on is Ulysses good or bad?" This is not even a conversation to be had. The conversation should be framed "could there be a modern literature without James Joyce?" and you can argue from there. Good or bad are not part of any serious discussion of Joyce. (Spoiler - it's good)

Like, if someone tells you Finnegans Wake is gibberish, you no longer have to concern yourself with their opinion on it - they are wrong, and it is not. Whether the language-aesthetic of FW appeals to you is a legitimate conversation, but not whether it is a prank or gibberish, etc. That isn't part of the conversation about Finnegans Wake.
Just the inanity and vacuousness of "is it good are bad?" is worth laughing in the face of. Has intellectual discourse really grown this mouth-breather-y?

Ian wrote: "Here's one hopeful item: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7Fob..."That was actually really nice! And yes, I've been rereading it this week in anticipation of the birthday and the (kinda) centennial

Some of the "Againsts" are just plain nutty! And since when was Paolo Coelho qualified to comment on...anything?

Good point.
I was actually sorry to say that, as I don't like to run down writers—except when they are running down others: Today writers want to impress other writers . . . One of the books that caused great harm was James Joyce’s Ulysses, which is pure style. There is nothing there. Stripped down, Ulysses is a twit.
