The "villain" of this story is supposedly the brother of Sadie, Jackson. And I get that the author wants us to believe that he's overly harsh with Sadie but I've not seen that at all yet..is this just me? What did I miss?

Writing is strange. I don't follow parts of the story with strange words added to sentences and sentences that make little sense to begin with. Almost feels like the author is trying too hard to sound witty that the meaning gets lost.
