Her eyes stung, but she blamed it on the fierce wind and blinked away the dampness. “For making my freedom mean something.”

“And what sort of world would I need to create for that to happen?”
“A world where men govern themselves."

Adarlan could take their freedom, it could destroy their lives and beat and break and whip them, it could force them into ridiculous contests, but, criminal or not, they were still human.
