The party of three march on and eventually run into the Riders of Rohan. A lot of posturing and the truth is eventually known: Boromir's dead, the Orcs are dead, and there's been no sign of the hobbits. Saruman's forces are giving the Rohirrim a run for their money, and Theoden now hates Gandalf, who's also dead. Shadowfax is alive, though. He returned to Rohan after being stolen by Gandalf.

Aragorn finds Boromir dead among the corpses of the orcs he slew during the attack. B rouses & tells A that the orcs made off with “the hobbits.” Legolas & Gimli arrive & A tells them what B reported. They set B afloat who goes over Rauros falls & sing a dirge. A discovers, by checking tracks, that Frodo & Sam have started out for Mordor, & A, G, & L go after the company of orcs to try to rescue the other hobbits.
