The young Hegel does not seem to want to understand that, in the spirit of the Gospels, the Law—God’s commandment!—is situated well above “morality” and universal reason,and that if one nonetheless wishes to maintain that the Law was conceived to serve mankind and not to subjugate him, then all the more reason that this would be the case with reason, universal or otherwise.
