Personally, I'm seeing less and less need for Goodreads. I'm pretty much only using it to measure my reading progress in the 'challenge.' Otherwise, it fails spectacularly the whole way round.

Speesh The design and 'usability' is appalling. Truly dreadful. If it's meant to inspire, it doesn't. Makes me think "ooh! Gotta get out of HERE!"

Speesh The design and graphics are the worst of 20th Century America. Fussy, unintuitive, 'I know! Let's add ANOTHER kitchen sink!"

Speesh The book choices and recommendations are so Americocentric, you'd be forgive for thinking, despite the vast majority of the books being read NOT being by Americans, the fact that 'we' out here in the real word ever read books NOT by Americans, or published by American publishers, is front page news to Goodreads. As long as that front page is of USA Today, of course. Face it - the books of the year, I'd read one. And that was one I had to get hold of off eBay, from a Yank.

Speesh The recommendations are particularly ridiculous. I mean, I read a book which is the re-imagining of a 10th century poem, based on earlier oral traditions and what do Goodreads recommend because I enjoyed Beowulf? "The Watchmen (Elvis Cole #11; Joe Pike #1" I mean, there's not a Dark Age, Anglo Saxon Warrior in Sweden, Denmark and Britannia in sight! Unless, Beowulf is now a Trans-person, and “a hard-partying young heiress whose life is in danger.” And I'm supposed to believe their recommendations after that?

Speesh The groups too. Well, the one that put me off anyway - Historical Fiction something or other. Condescending, deriding the poor, the working class. someone with an absolutely infuriating habit of commenting on EVERY SINGLE post or comment. And tells me to 'be nice.' Half of them don’t even buy their own books, either. Read from bloody libraries the whole time (I support libraries here in Denmark. I borrow CDs and DVDs. But not books. Can you guess why?).
I’m really struggling see what the point of Goodreads is.

Jane I agree recommendations are pretty useless. I get any from the reviews here and where I read them elsewhere. Their point I think [and I may be cynical here] is to tout the Big A.
