In chapter 2, Aland ably pokes holes in Jeremias’s view that entire households entered the early Church together. Aland gives valid analysis of the same sources Jeremias uses, and refutes his interpretations well.

Contends - in the introduction - that no matter the historical data one appeals to, that the answer to the question (in the title) will come down to theology, rather than history.
Not sure what I think about that (at the moment) but am looking forward to Aland’s answer to Jeremias’s initial volume.
