She gave another wiggle that nearly had him swallowing his tongue. Damn if she didn’t do it on purpose. Everything in him wanted to kiss her until she couldn’t breathe. But he didn’t want their first kiss to be like that. He wanted to go slow with her. If he gave into his hunger now, this would be his only shot. With any other woman, it might be enough.

And how would she introduce him to friends? “This is my boyfriend, Mal. He leads ghost tours?” Yes, that would be exactly the step she needed to be taken seriously.

“You need to go,” Maddy said, her voice firm. “You can’t be here anymore. You don’t belong here.” Then Maddy’s head snapped sideways and four scratch marks appeared on her face. Mal caught her shoulders and pulled her around behind him, pulse thundering. “You need to go,” he said to the space in front of where Maddy had been. “You’re not wanted here.”

She lifted her fingers to her nose. She couldn’t identify the scent, but it wasn’t blood. It wasn’t Karo syrup, either. “Where did it go?” she asked, looking at Mal. Whose eyes were glazed as he stared at her ass. She sat on her heels quickly and snapped her fingers in front of his nose. “Watch it.” He winked. “I was. And when you looked back at me like that—” He shook his head. “Damn.”

She’d been editor of the Washington Square News but had turned down two offers from major papers out of obligation to her family. Then they sold the magazine without telling her, and "Extravagant" was now "Adventure," an adventure tours magazine. And she was out here to hunt ghosts.
