She did look better without the glasses. More importantly, she felt better too. Ventura didn’t know when it was that she’d completely given up on her appearance. Though perhaps it was more accurate to say, she’d never paid that much attention to it. Now that she was starting to, things seemed to be coming together for her. It was like she was developing confidence in herself as a woman for the very first time.

Richard had taken nearly a month planning this out, and after their date the previous weekend, he was certain he was doing the right thing. There was no one he wanted in his life more than Ventura. She was right for him. In a very special way, she was right for all of them. And not just as the nanny. The moment she’d left their house to take that job at the paper, he’d realized that.

I mean, you’re not working for me now. And well… I hope you don’t mind, but Jason told me you’re no longer seeing Charles.” Ventura stared at Mary, who innocently turned away. “That would be nice,” she said.

I should have shut the door.” “No harm done,” she said, backing away. “None at all,” he agreed. “Ventura?” She stared at him, her heart pounding. “Do you think I could have my shorts back?” Ventura gasped and looked down in horror, spying Richard’s underwear twisted snugly around her shoe.

Ventura nodded numbly, thinking this was always the way. For most of her life, she’d been completely discounted by men. She hadn’t even had a boyfriend in high school. When guys took an interest, they considered her the girl with the good personality…and, she presumed—though none had specifically said—the great big butt.
