The layout of Breakfast of Champions is very unique. It is known from the beginning that Dwayne and Kilgore meet, but it is not known how or when. Dwayne is given a set of ideas by Kilgore when they meet. These ideas basically state that all humans are robots or machines, and that Dwayne is the only real living thing. The ideas are called bad ideas, meaning they will have a negative effect on Dwayne.

It seems that one of the main themes expressed by the narrator revolves around Kilgore’s science fiction writing. Kilgore says in his writing that all other humans are machines or robots, and there is but one actual living being that they are all waiting for. The chapters explain things as if entering information into a robot or presenting them as a robot or machine would.
