I have a horrible suspicion that the author is going to use Soot to show that someone tried to poison Stanley with his pears. If so, that will turn me off the book and and this series.

I'm having some trouble with this book, partly because the targets of the murderer or murderers are the ancient porters of Cambridge, and partly because they've threatened Soot, the cat belonging to the first victim. Consquently, I'm worrying over what they will do to the porters and the cat.
