*SPOILERS*
Pechorin is cocky and selfish. I see a light somewhere inside him, but overall, he's a jerk. Because we see the story through hero's eyes, and after we know what has happened to him, It can uncover him more, since now we not nessacary following actions, but the character. I might be wrong of course, and this is just me or a coincidence.
