The writing style can feel a tad naive; there can be a bit of infodump and repetitions do pop up (does everyone have jet black hair?) but my goodness does Freya's experience of school remind me of my own... except I did the work in class and had no magical abilities. But otherwise the Brit state school experience of bullies, uninterested teachers, and general social awkwardness is spot on.
