Grosskurth gives many of Byron's more serious claims very short shrift - she reckons he was a habitual liar, especially when he didn't want to take the blame or responsibility for his own actions and desires.
Rather makes me consider the sympathy I had for him after reading his letters recently, and seeing everything from his point of view.

I'm constantly amazed at the blitheness of young aristocrats - Byron has jaunted off the the Near East, leaving his mother barely able to heat the house, his friend Scrope paying the interest on Byron's own bills, the tradesmen of Nottingham about to go bankrupt from his unpaid bills, with over £14000 in debts!
Meanwhile he and Hobhouse are sauntering around war zones, and chasing after young boys!
