“I’d lose him.” It was the truth. The only truth to live behind a lifetime of lies. “I know you don’t think he’s much of a father, but he’s the only one I’ve got.” I caught sight of my mother approaching. She beamed at me. My mother, so proud of me. My mother, so weak. “And she’d lose him, too.”

He glared at me, so long and so hard I thought I’d melt under the intensity of his gaze. The glasses were there, but he was no longer mine. “Yes, Tess,” he said at last. “You’ve made a liar out of me, too.”
And that, I realized, was the worst thing of all.

His smile faded. “No. I had it made two years ago, after I got home from Cornell.” He let the charm fall back on to my skin. “A cousin of mine does silverwork. I—wanted to give you something. But I never saw you again.”

He saw me, too, and blindly handed off the pastries to my mom. “Tess.” Two steps, and he was in the room, and his hands were sliding up to cup my jaw, his fingers weaving into my sleep-mussed waves. “I can’t wait anymore,” he whispered, and then our lips touched, a soft, sweet press of mouth on mouth. A greeting. A promise.
