Much has happened to Emma. After her Fathers death, she is forced to leave the circus and his sent to live with her Grandmother. She works very hard on the Yorkless farm, but is treated poorly by the family. Even her Grandmother seem mean and uncaring. She has the good fortune to become friends with the new Paster and a gentleman who all call the painter. The only one who treated her well on the farm is Barney.
