I am enjoying this book it does not matter that I do not know the backstories of all other characters. I do not want to give any spoilers but would say I have just read about Elspeth and Wyatt's previous meeting and it paints her mother, Martine, in a worse light. I hope the story gives some sort of reasonable explanation for her behaviour.

Firstly I would say that I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway. I have read some but not all of the earlier books. There has been reference to people and event which I assume refer to books I have not read.
Not surprising that Elspeth moved continents, her mother is a control freak and her sisters are selfish and childish. I am not sure yet about the hero, actions so far seem to be sto show nice caring man.
