I read this in Anglo-Saxon (a year grad course) and preferred it to Beowulf because it was first person, an account of a great defeat by "playing fair," allowing the Vikings to land. Big Mistake. The authro cites various friends and how they died fighting the Vikings in that battle. I've been to Maldon, and it's a marshy area not unlike my hoetown of Wesport MA with its two tidal estuaries and 80 Osprey nests.

Hi, Alan. Thanks for your comment. How lucky you are. I wish I could go to see Maldon, and its marchy areas, I have read on these wooden walkways by low tide, some even exist to this day apparently. I am also impressed you could read old English, seems so strange. I speak German and even so I can just get near to understand a few words. I will write a few comments on my perception of 'The Battle'.
