The Shannara Saga with a new set of clothes. Terry Brooks sets this story in the present but gives one of the main characters the gift of magic and another character the use of a magical device. It's a great idea, unfortunately it gets rather repetitive in places. I'm anxious to see how the saga continues now that he has established this new style.
