“How is everything going with Leida Lands?” “I moved out to the ranch and left everything behind. Without my inheritance, I didn’t have much to get things going, but I found an investor. I realized that as much as I loved what I was doing, being alone didn’t make any of it feel more important or special.”

“Right time, right place?” Chad whispered as he leaned in to kiss his bride. “This time, last time, and every time in between,” Kate said with confidence before she kissed her husband with all of the hope she held for the future.

Had she come all this way for nothing? Was she too late? Again? “You hurt my boy.” Hank squinted his eyes at her. “He didn’t take it well when you took off.” “Took off?” she said in surprise. “He was the one who made me leave!” “Because you were in love with someone else.

I haven’t accomplished all of my goals yet.” Kate nodded. “You will.” Once she forgave the man who had killed her parents, she was able to let love in again. She wanted Chad to have the same release, and she hoped that it would happen for him someday. “And when you realize that still isn’t enough, you’ll figure out how important love is. And when you do, I want you to call me.

“When I saw Ashley walking down the aisle and decided that it wasn’t right for the two of us to get married, it wasn’t just because we were rushing things. It was more than that. I stopped the wedding because I realized in that moment that she wasn’t you.” Tears filled Kate’s eyes. What impeccably bad timing she and Brian had.

Chad smiled. “I just want to follow my passion.” “What about the marrying part?” she asked. “You sort of caved on that one.” “Only because I had to. It’s not like it’s hard for me to find a date, but I’ve never seen myself in the loving husband role. Leida Lands is my future. It’s my passion. And it’s something I want to do without my parents looking over my shoulder.

“Brian told Mark that he realized he just wasn’t in love with his fiancé and he couldn’t go through with the ceremony. He was going to go on his honeymoon alone to get his head on straight and then come back to work.” “Brian’s not married.” “That’s right! But you are.

I’m sorry. You must not know your son very well. This man may have flaws, like we all do, but he has cared for me and looked out for me and made me feel like no one else ever could. If you can’t see how special your son is, then it’s your loss. He has a woman in his life now who sees it, and it doesn’t matter what you think.

Kate was beginning to understand a few things about her new husband. He was used to getting his way, and he also seemed to want to use every angle he could to publicize their marriage. He wanted things to seem “normal,” even though they were far from it, and the fact that she was on television helped his cause.

“Here’s the deal,” Chad said, leaning back in the chair and crossing his legs. “You marry me tonight, and we live as husband and wife for a year. After that year, I give you one million dollars and your walking papers, and you can go about your life as if we’d never met.”
