Alright. So, George R.R. Martin is essentially, at least according to the reviews of the traditional literati, a rebel. In his first book, he already destroys pretty much every castle-fairy-tale stereotype. He can sure present a rugged, middle-aged hero, but he ends its possibility when Ned turns dead by losing his head. By smashing all these tropes associated with his book, he produces the classic effect on readers.
