Barnett's writing is so much more than a heart-stopping nightmare world. Dentist Mike Roberts' sphere becomes small and crowded (think spiders, think emotional rot) as the mother he cares for sinks deeper into her demented state and he grasps to remain among the living and the sane. The narrative pulled me in and I felt comforted by the conventions of classical horror, a la King, and excited by this fresh new voice.
