Okay, THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE MYSTERY—SOLVED! this ain't, but I could see myself building an amusing outline of claims and counterclaims from this (typically of the form "Von Daniken singles out X with an appeal to aliens did it, but why does he apparently leave Y with the conventional explanation?"). Excited to get to the final chapter, "Spiritual forces all around us" (!) though.

"If it were not that he uses illustrations from the Bible we would ignore the argument [...] But because Christians the world over will be offended [...] some sort of reply is called for." It's not worth it to refute Von Daniken on behalf of every thinking person, apparently.

He keeps insisting that non-Biblical stories are obvious mythology, superstition, etc., while simultaneously asserting that (e.g.) the Exodus story is perfectly historical and maybe the Maya people came to Mesoamerica after the Tower of Babel fell??? Like, the whole point of Chariots is that "it's aliens" is at least as plausible as "it's Yahweh" (or Whomever)...

Dr. Wilson takes the trouble to both refute Von Daniken's "atomic destruction" hypothesis for the Bible story of Sodom and Gomorrah, as well as assure us that those cities were real, wicked, and subject to the divine judgment of Yahweh. He might have been overconfident; according to wiki no clear candidate for those cities has yet been decided on. Sigh.

Oh yeah, this gets very "defending the faith" pretty quick. It's amazing how fast the author blows by Von Daniken's reasoning (or "reasoning", really) and insists on a very Christian-chauvinist interpretation of history and Biblical historicity in particular. It's far too much work, for one thing!

Very interested to see the contemporaneous response to Von Daniken, especially because this book apparently has a religious bent? If so it'll be like Godzilla vs King Kong but oh well ;)
