Good pioneer story. I'm not in love with the writing style, but I love a pioneer adventure so the plot keeps me coming back for more. I'm not able to connect with the characters emotionally. I keep trying to figure out why. Maybe it's too much detail repeated. The dialogue is stilted at times and doesn't feel natural. The God references are nice but sometimes overplayed. Back to see what happens next...

The characterization improved. I actually cried during one poignant moment. It's still moving a bit fast to get a deep POV connection but the characters are numerous and interesting. I like the 2nd half of the book much better than the first half. There are enough missing words to make me think this book would shine with another pass through by an editor. I'm glad I persevered because I'd like to try the next book.
