Winter is approaching and winds are incredibly strong. Mawson has not returned from his expedition, and because battling the winds without an anchor takes up to much fuel the Aurora has to head back to Melbourne soon. They will only be staying for a few more days.

Masson has survived, but word gets around that both his companions died, And the camp goes silent. The Aurora turns back without Mawson, as he was in South Georgia. He skins penguins on his way back, and we learn about his life later on.

So far Stan has reached Commonwealth Bay, and it has turned out, some of the scientists who went out on an expedition with a Dr. Mawson, have all disappeared and are three days overdue when they have only taken 6 weeks rations. He says there is much anxiety within the camp. It is also extremely cold in Antarctica, and the winds are brutal on the ship. Stan has lost all three anchors on the ship.
