I have always thought that this series is very reminiscent of some of the great things of the Vorkosigan Saga; especially in its portrayal of politics and characterization of individuals; doing a LOT to make clear their individual drives. Now, I am starting to see it applied to the other great strength of that series: family. The last book did it somewhat, but this one....a conversation very early on between Dimir..

....and Bren was extremely powerful, despite all being held in the typical dry, formal, flowery dialogue of the Ata'vi (not sur eif spelling that right; I listen to all the books) language. This is only possible because of the huge volume of work Cherryh has invested into building this world and culture. Astonishing to have such a powerful emotional conversation delivered so unemotionally.
