The snippet "Gladiator picked off the projectiles with gamesmanlike ease," reminded me of playing a score of deer-hunting games on the computer as a young girl. I don't think I actually would go out into the forest much at this point. I may still go fishing with a good book. (And likely lose my lure and other parts of the gear periodically.)

I put the next volume of this series on hold before I was even 75% of the way through in greatest of hopes. I AM SO VERY CLOSE TO THE THREE QUARTERS POINT OF THIS INCREDIBLE BOOK THOUGH

I find the nods to European and Egyptian history (as in reference to Caesar) in the context of a sci-fi fun and exciting.

IFF makes me think "if and only if" all the time. I have to re-educate myself that in this context, it stands for "Identify Friend or Foe." But I can do it! That is the power of the mind - outside this book I can think it is a strong conditional connective. Hehe, here is the Wiki truth table for IFF: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_and_... - uh oh, getting back into Topology all over again here.
