The manga starts off by giving us the story of Edward and Alphonse Elric who commited the taboo of alchemy which is human transmutation. When this occurs the brothers goal is to bring their mother back to life but the transmutation went horribly wrong. The brothers are both sucked into a weird portal which causes Ed to lose an arm and a leg and Al to lose his body.

This stone is said to be the answer to all things, so to Ed and Al this was the ticket for them to get their bodies back. They travel to the city of hersey where they cross paths with a priest that is corrupted by the power of the philosopher's stone.
