Midway thru this book is a section on the Hansa's role in England; their status with the elite and with common people.
Very familiar from today's Brexit arguments.

Weakly written and occasionally polemical. But I hadn't managed to find anything else on the Hanseatic League.

It is possible to draw a rough comparison between the Hanseatic League and the cities associated with Carthage. Both were maritime, commercial alliances that could provide military protection at need. Neither sought to exercise power by force of arms.
So far, HZ has not made this point, and my attempt at googling Hanseatic Carthage led to no relevant hits. I guess there is a book there for someone to write.

Nationalists often make sceptical and coarsely derogatory remarks regarding the United Nations & similar international bodies. Supposedly they are a priori ineffective and unqualified to exercise state power. But the Hanseatic League, covering much of northern Europe west of the Rhine, was for a time the dominant force in European affairs.
