We first meet Mac Kelsey after the tragedy of Pearl Harbor. It seems he is in an afterlife, possibly on his way to heaven. He sees a lot of his crew and others from other ships such as the Arizona, of those that have passed as well. Chapter 2 goes back to just before the attack. The author does a great job of describing the scene before the first strike hits and goes on to gruesomely describe the attack.
