Finished the first chapter and have mixed thoughts. 1) the writing style seems very simplistic, which might be deliberate because Jensen was writing from the first person POV of a 10-year-old boy. 2) I felt confused as to what was going on, especially why the children of Edward III were suddenly, abandoned. 3) I like the concept of the Black Prince as a scared little boy and can't wait to how he develops.

I just read a chapter in which Philippa of Hainault recounts meeting Edward III and falling in love with him, Edward III recounts meeting Philippa of Hainault and falling in love with her, and Joan of Kent recounts her POV of the first two chapters where she fell in love with the Black Prince. Meanwhile, outside, the Black Death rages. *heavy sigh*

Edward III is a TERRIBLE father in this. He tells his son (who's about 10) that he'll be sodomised to death if he's a bad king, then threatens the same son (now 16) that he'll be tossed overboard if he speaks up against his father again. Now it's implied that Edward gave this son (still 16) a dangerous posting for the express purpose of killing him. I really, really doubt this interpretation of Edward III.

I've seen this praised for its accuracy but Edward III just told his son that his grandfather, Edward II, was "buggered ... to death with a hot iron". Edward II almost certainly wasn't killed by a hot poker (if he was murdered at all) and Edward III would have known he wasn't. It's framed as Edward III warning his 10-year-old son about being bad king too so, man, that's some terrible parenting.
