We've just started this with our boys. How far along are you?

I'm at Chapter 3 in Book II - "The Ring Goes South". :) They just had the Council at Rivendell.

It's a (a second or third) reread for me, but I'm really loving it! I had forgotten so much, and I'm enjoying the sincerity and purity of the story, where others trade in cynicism.

But I kind of cringed at the tattletale Southerner in Bree described as "slanty-eyed" and "swarthy", haha. Not the most SJW of types, but that still made an impression. That aside, Tolkien's focus upon *peoplehood* is really striking and very uncomfortable for our individualistic, atomized age. I dig it. :D

How do your boys like the story? What seems to draw their attention or make an impression? I'm really curious. :)
