Edited volume. Some chapters are very much focussed on specific places in specific periods. I was a bit disappointed by the introduction (and there is no concluding section) which just reiterates the main findings of each chapter. The benchmark for me here are Tilly volumes. He always gives a very general and insightful "big picture" type of discussion w/o relying too much on specific results of the contributions.
