Winters have a fair bit of snow. Not exactly dry. And summers are hot & dry. Certainly not warm & wet. Rain is mostly in spring & fall, and you can see it coming from miles & miles away.

Parts of the Panhandle may bloom with many yellow flowers, but Amarillo is named that for the dirt, not the flowers. In May, the yuccas are blooming. Lots & lots of yucca with spires of creamy pale pale green bells on spikes. It's not really as flowered as further south & East, on the wet side of the dry line.

The hero is from Amarillo. A horse ranch in Amarillo, which is absolutely ridiculous. Amarillo is a big city. There's nowhere to put a ranch, it's all full up with houses & businesses and hospitals & schools & stuff. A ranch close by would be in Bushland or Vega or Wildorado or even Happy. I realize that it's "only" 195,000 population, but that's the biggest city from Albuquerque to OKC. It's just silly.
