And so the book is mainly a series of letters between these two characters. But just about when I started wondering if I’m going to read letters till the end of the book, excerpts of Varvara’s childhood journal started showing up and so now I’m getting more insight into her character and life.

Starts with a letter Makar Devushkin has written to Varvara Alexievna.From the letter we understand Mr. Devushkin is madly in love with Varvara, but they do not meet. He lives across the street from her house and watches her through the window. This is where I started to wonder if he is more of a stalker; but then we read Varvara’s reply to his letter and understand that they have a very sincere relationship.
