You know you're in for an intense sci-fi that opens with a kidnapping/mystery and a multiple-pages-long discussion on overpopulation experiments done to mice, with an eye towards humanity's own overpopulation.

I've put my finger on why I don't like Inherit the Earth or this book: Stableford doesn't have the chops to write thrillers, and I would much rather read, say, 300 pages of the characters discussing the big ideas they're pursuing. So many pages wasted on a not-good-enough game of cat and mouse - and the best parts are the bits where the characters talk ideas and do nothing else.

Oh, here we go. Now that more of the mystery has been revealed, and the characters are talking philosophy almost all the time, it's beginning to speed up and become a good book.
Still not sure I buy radfems as villains, but I've read crazier.

Just finished the main part of the second section, where Lisa gets shot at and gets to interrogate one of her captors and it's all questions and more questions - as much as I like this author, he really isn't suited to writing thrillers, imo. His style is too slow and thoughtful. Fortunately the bonus flashbacks tend to be more of what he's best at, and I am curious enough to keep reading to find out what is going on

Ten more pages and I'm full of thoughts about overpopulation.

Okay, lmao, they're earnestly discussing the potential of genetically altering mice to produce useful proteins in their urine so they can collect and harvest it.
