Chapter 1-5 are even better than I remember from 20 years ago. From truly funny to alarming, exciting and adventurous. In chapter 5-8 there is too much (silly) danger resolved too quickly, but I also remember being less impressed by the Bombadil parts. So far Peter Jackson certainly made the right decisions.

The Council of Elrond is a tremendous teaser for Silmarillion and everything Moria is perfected excitement. In the end The Lothlórien chapters outstays their welcome but the things get back into gear with the two focused and tense last chapters of Book II.

After three weaker chapters the last four in Book One are as perfect as the first five chapters. Less cozy but wildly exciting. The lookout from Weathertop is the very idea of excitement and tension.
