Study of the Word is greatly incomplete without complete dependence on the Spirit and the discipline of prayer.

Luther to preachers and pastors:
Don't be lazy and laid back. Study your Bible, read books! And in your study, these three are essential: prayer, meditation and trial.

Luther saw the importance of intense study of Scriptures, especially when teaching and preaching them to the people.

"Pastors are essentially brokers of the Word of God transmitted in a Book. We are fundamentally readers, and teachers and proclaimers of the message of the Book. And all of this is for the glory of the incarnate Word and by the power of the indwelling Spirit. But neither the indwelling Spirit nor the incarnate Word leads us away from the Book that Luther called the 'external Word.'"
