The gated end is the West end, not North. Author has obviously never been there... South would have been an honest mistake, but not North.

Honestly, if you're going to write a story (even a fictional one!) about a real place, do some damned research. If you're too lazy to research, just make up a fictional place.

Signs aren't about protecting seagrass, they are about protecting dunes. The "wooden walkways" (boardwalks) aren't for protecting seagrass, they're for protecting dunes.

Holden Beach runs East/West, not North/South. There is a good coffee place. Maybe the author should have visited before writing the book.
