I've read a few books that blend the genres of sci-fi and magical realism, and I'm immensely enjoying my time exploring the world of 'American Elsewhere' and the town of Wink. It's not precisely hard sci-fi — I don't think the author has put in years of research like Neil Stephenson — but it's refreshing that there is not a lot of magical hand-waving. The further explaining are revealed, the deeper the mystery grows.
