I read this book in college at the U of Nebraska in 1992. I taught it in a fiction class this fall. I won't ever teach it again. This book is brutal in so many ways. I admire and respect Toni Morrison. I will consider teaching another of her works. But as I looked out into the eyes of my students as the realities of this text became clear to them, I permanently scratched it off this syllabus and all others.
