I did try this book ages ago. I got quite far into it. (I think) but like Terry Goodkind (who I think is good but not great) I feel that he takes 5 pages for a raised eyebrow. But my neighbour just tore through the first 5 and handed them straight to me. So I thought... might as well start at the beginning.
I hope you get through them this time, James. Martin's books can be a bit wordy and padded. See if it'll help using audiobooks as well as physical ones to help speed up the time it takes to read this book. That is, if you don't mind audiobooks. Good luck! :)
