Yes, this is a product of its time, but I’ve read plenty of YA of this period that have characters so flummoxed at having to interact socially with dark-skinned people who “might have come from the same family as their maid Delia back home.” I’ll keep reading, in the hopes that Peggy will have her consciousness raised. ;)

Peggy is now reeling from the shock of having met a mixed race couple, while her mother is delirious with joy at having finally found a maid who has the good manners to speak English. This is not improving.
